Erm, pretty sure the Doctor loved her....
Sorry, they're my couple. I'll get defensive about them.

I keep going back and forth on that myself. Maybe he loved her but couldn't let himself love her.

One of my favorite things about Rose is that she's definitely working-class. The doctor has had teachers, physicians, journalists, and Gallifreyan Presidents as companions before. To my knowledge, Rose is the first genuinely working-class friend he has ever taken along on the TARDIS... and one of the only ones he has ever fallen in love with. She went from being a shopgirl who never even finished school, to being able to travel pan-dimensionally and build her own time machine out of mirrors, for heaven's sake. To me, the character of Rose in Doctor Who shows that the traditionally classist society of the UK is definitely changing.

Oh, and yeah, the Doctor loved her. Even the writers say so, as do all of the actors involved. Even Christopher Eccleston (Nine) said so in an interview, that Nine's relationship with Rose was "a love story." David Tennant agrees; he calls it "a love story without the shagging." The mutuality of their love is nearly impossible to miss, if you ask me. It was written into the show on purpose, for heaven's sake. Don't know how someone can say that her love wasn't returned. Sorry, River!

Yea, I say the Doc hid behind the whole grow old and eventually die alone thing. However it is also shown that the doctor can decide not to regen and each regen ages normal so who knows.

He loves her... he just never got to actually say it. Damn you, Moffat! lol. I think what River meant was that in the show, Doctor's love for Rose was never physically shown, in the aspect of how we show love to our loved ones. At least until that last episode. That being said, Rose is one of my favorite companions, and I bawled like a baby when she was left.
