Rory didn't meet the Doctor until the business with Prisoner Zero & The Atraxi but he spent his whole child hood hearing about him from Amy whom is his friend. Rory is thought to be gay by Amy until it is pointed out by Mels that Rory likes Amy. They then get together.

When the Doctor discovers that He & Amy are to wed he crashes the stag party and from that point Amy & Rory both travel with the Doctor.

During the travels Rory goes through so much. He dies & is erased by the cracks. He is then a Roman Auton who looks after Amy for 2000 yrs.
After the universe is rebooted everything is back on track.

He & Amy then have more adventures with the Doctor including Discovering River/ Mels is their Daughter Melody they have been looking for.

You have to feel sorry for Rory. It has already been said that he's the South Park -" Kenny" of Doctor Who. He gets killed in almost every other episode it seems.
"Oh My God, they killed Rory!!!"

I know what you mean. They also always seem to find interesting ways for him not to stay dead.
