When we first meet Donna she is brought aboard the Tardis on her wedding day because a scheme of her then fiancé, Lance & The Racnos. She has an adventure with the Doctor and he asks her to join him and she turns him down..
They again meet up about a year or so later in the 4th Series where she does take him up on his offer. They have many adventures together and by the end in order to save the universe and 27 planets from the Daleks she ultimately had to sacrifice her memories of her travels with the Doctor in order to stay alive..
