This was the "Infamous" Tom Baker six part show that was to close the seventeenth season but was halted and cut because of a strike at the BBC. Since it wasn't broadcasted on television, and Tom Baker's refusal to participate in the special for reasons of his own - clips were used and edited into the 20th anniversary show "The Five Doctors" to incorporate him in it. Also, since this was never aired on tv- the notion of other renagade Time Lords and other lifeforms cannot be in the known "Whoniverse", but may be well fitted into the novels or comics world.
The Novel:
Garath Roberts was able to bring Douglas Adams' script back to existance. Garath- who is a writer for the new series and for "The Sarah Jane Adventures," had the task of completing the novel from Douglas's work with extra ideas of his own thrown in, explaining for the reader to better understand what's going on. He writes that the Doctor uses a "Thought Box" like the one Patrick Troughton used to contact the Time Lords seen in "The War Games' and again in "The Doctor's Wife" to let his people know what he and Romana are up against before K-9 destroys it. He explaines in better and greater detail on the history of Skagra and what all has transpired in the adventure and answers the questions the reader may have thought about through the novel. Skagra's creatures- the Kraags are described better to the reader's mind and he also tells of the things he had to go through and cope with in the Afterwards section.
The DVD:
This is a 3 disc set that contains the unseeen show with disc 2 and 3 as special features.
Shada was put together and re-edited on VHS tape back in 1992 with Tom Baker narating the parts that wasn't filmed so the viewer can have an understanding of what's happening. David Briefley also returned to voice a few parts of K-9 where needed be. There's even a "Big Finish version" animated webcast for your PC or Mac with the Eighth Doctor - Paull McGann and Lalla Ward.
Disc 2 tells of what happened to the show because of the strike and what the cast and crew went through. It also tells that Douglas had to come up with for a storyline and later he admitted that he wasn't happy with the results of his script. He went as far as saying he never wanted the show to be finished and nothing to do with it, since he was having success with his "Hitchhiker's Guide..." series of the radio show, novels and then tv show.
Disc 3 has a "Made for DVD" special called, "More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS." along with "Remembering Nicolas Courtney" - on his history on screen as various characters, then his history on Doctor Who and an episode on the second season of the Sarah Jane Adventures. Othet tid-bits are added along with "Those Deadly Divas" with Kate O'Mara, Camielle Coduri, and Tracy-Ann Oberman.
For "Die-hard" Whovians, the DVD is good for those of who wants to see an un-aired eppisode brought back to life. John Nathan-Turner - who was the producer back in the 90s, was the one who was able to salvage it since the show had a "Cult" following in the USA.
Overall, it is a nice addition to the fan's collection - but the novel is HIGHLY recomended for your library.
