The Doctor's companions are not just people who travel with him in the TARDIS, but are friends who he trusts and values their judgement with his life. Even though they leave and go their seperate ways, they sometimes return to help the wandering Timelord when needed.
A few have met The Doctor on more than one time, but the character isnt established until after his regeneration. As an example - The Brigadier met him when the Yeti attacked in 'The Web of Fear" and then again with the Cybermen in "The Invasion" but then is firmly established with "Spearhead from Space", and returns again in "Mawdryn Undead," "The Five Doctors," and "Battlefield."
From when we first encounter him in November 23, 1963- 'An Unearthly Clild" to the FOX Tuesday Night TV Movie, here goes...
