Rani Chandra is a budding journalist who moves into Maria's old house. While at school she tries to befriend Luke yet he keeps her at a distance with missing Maria and not wanting the whole Alien thing to come out. Sadly though Rani being a journalist and as inquisitive as Sarah Jane at that age she soon discovers the truth and helps them banish the energy entity known as Spellman.
She joins the team and they have a great many adventures though she is sometimes put off when Maria is brought up because she feels she can't measure up for some reason.
Her dad is the head teacher at the school they attend which makes it hard for her to befriend Clyde as her dad takes an instant disliking to him. However he likes Luke from the go.
